CES 2014 Day 1: New Tablet News: Lenovo, Samsung & More

Fire HD 8: Under $60 only and Fire HD 10 (the Tablet of 2018) with $30 off Deals Today!

CES 2014 is in full swing in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lenovo unveiled their exciting new products, the MIIX 2 convertible tablets, which, come in both 10.1″ and 11.6″ screen versions. The main highlight of these latest mobile devices from Lenovo is the magnetized detachable slates that replace the often clumsy flip type keyboards on previous convertible models.

Magnets

Mirroring Apple’s magnetic battery charger, which, was designed to prevent damage to units from accidentally pulling the charger cord out, the Lenovo MIIX 2 comes with a magnetic snap that secures the detachable keyboard to the tablet. The jury is still out until more people get to actually use as to the security of these magnets when moving and picking up the device, but time will tell.

Design

The overall design of the MIIX 2 is attractive, it’s sleek and gleams with a brushed metal body that feels cool to the touch and while it only weighs in at 2 pounds with the keyboard attached and 1.3 without, and the larger screen model coming it at just under 3 pounds, it feels solid and strong in the hands. When compared with similar Windows 8 models, like, the Toshiba Encore, and the Venue 8 Pro, the MIIX is both lighter and thinner.

Display

Both MIIX models come with a full 1280 x 800 HD 10 point touchscreen display.

Operating System

The MIIX 2 tablets are powered by Windows 8.1. Enjoy apps and the all new customizable home page that Windows offers.

Processor

The larger tablet comes loaded with the 4th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, this is quite impressive and has stirred a lot of interest among the techies. The smaller MIIX table is loaded with an Intel Atom quad-core chip.

More Features:

  • 2 MP front camera
  • 5 MP Rear Camera
  • 1 USB port (dock offers one more on the smaller MIIX and two on the larger one)
  • 1 HDMI port
  • 8 hour battery life
  • 128GB storage on smaller models, and 256GB on larger models
  • More storage available via microSDHC

Final Thoughts

Overall, the big news coming from this tablet is the unique magnetic strip that secures the portable laptop in place, turning a very mobile laptop into a very useable stationary laptop.

The MIIX 2 will be available in stores as soon as March for the 11.6″ models and April for the smaller 10.1″ versions.
