Mobile World Congress 2014 report card: who made the grade?

There’s also the Gear Fit, which is a sleek, good-looking device that adds more variety to Samsung’s watch lineup; given its attractive design, curved AMOLED display and simple emphasis on fitness and notifications, we have a feeling it will be a success.

Nothing Sony announced this year would be considered a groundbreaking achievement, but the company came to MWC with a powerful trio of devices: the new flagship Xperia Z2, which comes with the best specs you can get in an Android phone; the waterproof Xperia Z2 tablet, which is actually thinner and lighter than the iPad Air

Interesting that Engadget gave Sony a grade of B, noting that nothing groundbreaking was announced. LG also received a grade of B, I guess that the reps from Engadget were not that impressed with any of the new products from that brand. While they gave Huawei a B, they do agree that they did show the most varied lineup of products of the entire show.

The only brand that got an A, and it was an A- was Samsung and this was mostly due to the unveiling of three new smartwatches. They note that the grade reflects Samsung’s attention to consumer needs in creating three new watches that will appeal to a wider consumer market, addressing customer needs and complaints quickly, as well as, a fast turnaround time of only five months in improving on their hardware.

Overall, there were a lot of C grades for other major brands. And, I guess it is hard to impress the geeks at Engagdet, since the show itself only rated a B.

I feel a little lost that MWC 2014 was over. Properly, Tablet has hit the “peak” as user demand and growth in 2013. This year, MWC had more spotlights on Wearable Gadgets; properly the OEMs wanna “hit” the spot before Apple or Google announced their HOT demand products in 2014. I personally look for to those before buying my own “wearable” for health purpose this year.

MWC 2014 Day 3 Wearable News: Sony Smart Band SWR10

The MWC 2014 Day 3 wearable news is exciting where more new products were announced that are sure to make a big splash in the mobile market worldwide. Sony unveiled its Life Wearable Camera and the Smart Band and Motorola announced the launch of their Smart Watch.

There were other wearable devices released that included wrist bands and bracelets, most of which were geared towards health and fitness. But, the Sony Smart Band actually tracks your whole life, dubbed now as the digital photo journal.

Sony Smart Band SWR10

The Sony Smart Band SWR10 communicates by use of Bluetooth.

Its concept of creating life bookmarks that users can look at and refer to later in life is a fascinating one. It’s like a digital journal you wear on your wrist. Some of the data that can be tracked, includes, what you did, with whom and when.

MWC 2014 Day 3 Wearable News

The Smart Band can also track steps, and movements in relation to fitness. Want to know how tight you are sleeping? The Smart Band can tell you that too.

Roy Mostril, a rep from Sony says that there are also many apps that make it even more functional and will give you the ability to track virtually everything you do and save the information. For example, you can track and save music you listened to and any games that were played.

The battery life reported is impressive, with Sony claiming up to a week of use on one charge. It’s also reported to be durable as well, and can survive any conditions.

Could this be a digital memory bank, a second brain? The Smart Band is due to be released in stores in March of 2014.

Motorola Smartwatch In The Works

More MWC 2014 Day 3 News brings the announcement of the Motorola Smartwatch.

“It’s our intention to deliver interesting wearable technology – we are developing a watch which will be coming out in the next year, our main focus is that we will start to solve a real user problem in that there are no wearable products you want to wear – all because they are all extremely ugly.” Rick Osterloh, SVP product management, said at the event.

It seems that Motorola’s goal is to create a watch that will be stylish and look more like jewelry.

Motorola has confirmed this week on Twitter that they are definitely working on a new wearable watch that will be available this year. They did confirm that their goal is address market issues that consumers have, such as, something stylish in design and a long battery life.

Motorola also confirmed that the smartwatch will run Android, and not the older version Tizen, but the newest Osterloh.

This Motorola smartwatch will be another product in the Moto Line, quashing rumors that the line would end when Lenovo purchased the company from Google.

MediaPad X1 Phablet Review

The MediaPad X1 is a 7″ phablet, which is a combination of phone and tablet in one. The X1 is the world’s slimmest 7″ model that has LTE and is Cat4-enabled.

The casing is impressive and made of full aluminum alloy. The 7″ high definition touch screen display offers 1200 x 1920 FHD LTPS with an 80% screen to body ratio.

A nice 1.6 GHz quad core processor powers this device and it runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean; which is a little bit disappointing as most of new introduced gadgets are in Android 4.4 Kit Kat at MWC.

One of the more astounding features of the MediaPad X1 phablet is that Huawei is claiming it has a 5000 mAh battery that provides 21 days of standby time, more than 5 days of continues use and reverse charging.

Two cameras are also included on the device, with an impressive 13 megapixel Sony Exmor R BSI rear-facing camera that provides users with panoramic shooting, as well as a 5 megapixel front-facing camera for video chat.

The MediaPad M1 also has microphone jack and dual front-facing speakers.

Thanks for reading our Huawei MediaPad M1 and X1 Phablet reviews. There is more information below from the webosphere about these latest launches announced at MWC 2014.

More About Huawei’s Latest Products

Huawei MediaPad X1 is the lightest and narrowest 7-inch tablet

Does the world need bigger smartphones? Huawei answers this question at MWC with the launch of its MediaPad X1, a 7-inch Android tablet that lets you make phone calls.

Huawei’s added a few neat software features, with our favorite one being the ability to scroll with one thumb while still gripping onto the touchscreen with the other thumb.

Interesting that Engagdget, in the above article, thinks that this model beats some heavy hitters in mobile devices, such as, ASUS Fonepad 7, Kindle Fire HDX 7 and the latest Nexus 7. They consider it more usable than other large phones, and considering how slim and lightweight it is it doesn not skimp on features, in fact it is dully loaded and the fact it claims such mind blowing battery life hours in such a compact design is really incredible.

I am amazed that Huawei can come up with a 7″ screen Phablet. It’s definitely a “new” product category. I saw some 6″ Phablets in 2013, but can’t imagine you could have 7 or even 8″ one making phone calls? Anyway, people make phone calls with bluetooth headset or speaker phone. Who really holds a huge screen over your ear? Also I do what’s app, text more than voice calls these days, but typing on big screen is not my cup of tea.

And you? What’re your thoughts about these Huawei new Phablets?

HP Slate VoiceTab

While HP has not been a major contender in the tablet market in the past, they are adding some new models this year in the form of phablets, which are tablets and smartphone combination devices.

The new Slate VoiceTab in both 6″ and 7″ inch models will launch in various European markets and they are already available in India. The specs of these mobile devices are modest to say the least, and certainly cannot complete as far as impressive features go with the earlier announced new Phablets from Huawei that come with a very long battery life.

But, each phablet is powered by a 1.2-GHz Cortex A9 quad-core processor, has 1GB of RAM and runs on Android 4.2.2.

Both the 6″ and 7″ inch models will have a dual SIM option and include HPís DataPass service, which offers users 250MB of free 3G data per month. Specs also include, 16GB of onboard storage that will be expandable to 32GB with the use of a microSD card slot. Both phablets also have a 5-megapixel main camera for taking photos.

The main difference between these two phablets is the screen size and resolution. The 6″ model has a 720 IPS display, while the 7″ slate will have a 1,280 x 800 resolution IPS panel. Pros present at the WTC who got a hands on feel for the phablets report that the screen display looks great with clear and crisp icons.

HP differs from popular models of phablets from LG and Samsung in that they only offer the stock Android experience.

An interesting element of these new phablets from HP is the wide array of back panel colors being offered, including, hot pink, purple, greys and blues. HP reports that all the back panels will be interchangeable, which, offers users a lot of choices to suit their tastes and moods.

This MWC 2014 day 2 tablet news is quite exciting, and it seems that we will have some great new products in the stores soon. I’m impressed that HP are still investing in producing niche Tablets in this competitive market. ElitePad 1000 G2 is targeting Enterprise Market and those Windows Based Hyper Laptop + Tablet makes sense given consumers are interested in buying 1 for 2 use.

I’m not so impressed with HP Slate VoiceTab though. 7″ inch tablet market is so crowded. I don’t know what the point is to have another 6″ tablet spec; unless the price point is very attractive like less than $100. I just don’t get 6″ inch tablet and how popular it would be.
